6 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom one hundred and twenty satraps, to be over the whole kingdom; 2 and over these, three governors, of whom Daniel was one, that the satraps might give account to them, so that the king would suffer no loss. 3 Then this Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm. 4 So the governors and satraps sought to find some charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no charge or fault, because he was faithful; nor was there any error or fault found in him. 5 Then these men said, “We shall not find any charge against this Daniel unless we find it against him concerning the law of his God.” (Dan. 6:1-5, NKJV).
While it is God who places believers in positions of influence, like he did Daniel and his compatriots, it is the believer, through his relationship with the Holy Spirit that distinguishes himself.
Unfortunately, some people, after being placed in positions of power and even attaining excellence lose it because they are unstable.
49 And Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:
2 “Gather together and hear, you sons of Jacob,
And listen to Israel your father.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.
4 Unstable as water, you shall not excel,
Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—
He went up to my couch (Gen. 49″1-4, NKJV).
Reuben lost his position of excellence because he was unstable. Instability in this case means that you lack focus and have no control over your emotions, you are not even consistent.
